Group that went to Brazil in July

Hi Dustin, Sorry, it took me a month to get back to you. It has been a hectic summer. The trip went really well! We had 30 kids give their hearts to Jesus at the end of the VBS, and then one of the teens made a committment to Jesus on Sunday. Things we learned... We planned most of the events for the VBS. The crafts that we chose, took longer to do than the other area. So, make sure that the other area had backup things to do. The Country class, went over things about the country, and taught them word in their language. They came up with games which group could find the country on the globe, and different games to quiz them. The game area taught them a game from each country. The kids picked them up pretty quickly, and then got bored with them. So definitely have more games prepared. The bible story, and snack area did okay. They just kept them talking about the story.
We basically had 30 minutes. The craft area definitely took the 30 min, and some days a few minutes more. The other groups were fighting to fill the 30 minutes.
Definitely over plan the areas. The youth from the church were a great help, in translating and also in helping to come up with fillers. One thing was that our team was very young, and were a little intimidated with all the kids, and not knowing the language. Our kids were supposed to lead each area, the first day was rough on them, and each day they got better and felt more adequate to lead. It really stretched them in every way. But it was a really rewarding time, for them and us as leaders to see how they grew, and stepped up to the challenge. I am sure that Lyndell will be in contact with you about the VBS. I had never done a VBS before, so it was definitely a learning experience for me. There were many things that I had never thought to ask before we got there. I did not know that our kids were to be in charge and lead the groups, I did not have them fully prepared to do fillers, and how to handle the curves that got thrown at them. Also, I did not know the time frame, as how long each group would be at each area. Make sure you ask her lots of questions. I am sure next years VBS will be different than this years. I know it was April before we had a theme, and knew what we were actually doing. This was Lyndell's first year of doing a VBS also, so I am sure she has learned a lot from this experience too.
Over all, it was a great trip. Everyone was stretched, and that was a good things. One other insight, is make sure that you group gets together often and prays together often before you go. That is so important for unity of your team, and for breaking any spiritual things that need to be broken.
If there is anything else that I can help you with, please let me know!! Blessings!! Pam

Heidi Myer says good-bye
Heidi says good-bye to all the leaders. She is heading to South Dakato tomorrow for college, to study soils and crops and stuff. She will also be in the marching band playing the french horn, and will most likely march in the Rose Bowl Parade. She hopes to be home over Christmas. Her roomate already asked her to be in a bible study, and help lead worship at a church nearby. Sounds good, Godspeed Heidi!!

Philly 08 - LAST DAY
Joined Victor’s Team – Dwight Gehman’s Team
Salvation Army West Philly
Salvation Army – West Philly – Victor & Ober’s Team
Completed our week, painted rooms and cleaned up outside. We totally uncovered a basketball court and got it ready for use. It had been previously covered with weeds.
Inner City Missions – Kensington – Dustin’s Team
Oh, a water leak, ruined many boxes of supplies headed for Liberia. So we cleaned up the room and repacked many supplies in new dry boxes.
Circle of Hope Church – Kevin’s Team
The church just closed on a new space just down the street. And we began the demolition of the floor tile today. We almost got the entire room down to the concrete. Fun day of hard work.
Children’s Ministry – Rose’s Team
Great last day. We celebrated by getting pizza and heading for the park.

House Renovation – Dwight Gehman’s Team
Day of helping to pack, clean and paint.
Salvation Army – West Philly – Victor & Ober’s Team
The weeds just won’t stop us…even though the poison Ivy tries!!!
The Simple Way – Kensington – Kevin’s Team
Got to spend another day cleaning up a city lot, getting it ready for “Green Space” or some park like structure for the neighborhood. I talked with one lady from down the street and she says she bought her house for $12,000 a few years ago. Property values are bit different than I’m used to in this neighborhood. The guys worked hard to locate a water meter 5’ under the ground.
Circle Thrift at Broad & Washington – Dustin’s Team
Hopped on the Elevated Train at K&A, and headed toward City Hall. Transferred to the Broad Street Subway line and arrive at Circle Thrift. Good day working at a great little thrift store near Center City Phila. Finally got to see their worship space at Broad and Washington, really beautiful hardwood room with large windows looking out over the city.
Children’s Ministry – Rose’s Team
The kids keep on coming, but the weeks getting a bit better as we learn how to structure things differently.

Philly 08...Wednesday 7.23
House Renovation – Dwight Gehman’s Team
Hauled dirt into their backyard to make a raised flower bed. Then cleaned and organized the back patio. Cleaned out the basement and plastered the basement walls.
Salvation Army – West Philly – Victor & Ober’s Team
Picked up trash. Fed homeless and senior citizen’s bananas, green beans, corn, bread, carrots, and milk. Then we smashed boxes and cleaned up the dumpster area. We also helped with the little kids. Then painted a hallway and everyone else scraped a dumpster and painted it black.
The Simple Way – Kensington – Dustin’s Team
All day in the sun, cleaning up a city block near the K&A in Kensington. The Simple Way lost a home in the devastating Keingisnton Fire last year. After 7 homes were leveled following the fire, the Simple Way Christian Community (Shane Claiborne’s group) decided to lead the charge in turning the land into a park and urban garden. We were there to help dig out rocks, weed and dig a trench for a water line.
The Simple Way – Kevin’s Team
Joined the above mentioned team.
Children’s Ministry – Rose’s Team
Had bible school again and had 39 kids show up. Had ages infant to 15. Acted out the story David and Goliath. The room is not big enough for all these kids, but we are trying to keep positive. We’ve got this guy JR that is only 15 but helps us run everything and translates all our information. He’s a true blessing for us.

Brook Hoffman Public School Classroom – Dwight Gehman’s Team
Brook is a 7&8 grade teacher at a middle school. Degumed and cleaned the desks. Sanded and stained wood trim around chalk boards and doors. We then painted one of the walls. We picked up where last year’s group left off.
Salvation Army – West Philly – Victor & Ober’s Team
Cut down some small trees and brush. We also painted some walls in the building.
Inner CityMissions – Kensington – Dustin’s Team
Cleaned out a closet and sorted the junk from the valuable. Made some support beams for bunk beds that are for groups volunteering at the center. We packed school supplies for a shipping container heading for a school in LYBERIA.
Circle of Hope – Kevin’s Team
Went to the urban garden and pulled weeds, made paths and laid down foundation for fresh soil. Finished the day off with some Gelatis.
Children’s Ministry – Rose’s Team
We were attacked by 11 year olds. Had first day of summer Bible School and had 21 kids. Things went o.k. but they didn’t like our songs we had to sing with them. Overall, it was fun to connect with them all.
